The Focus Awards Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Instructing Exercise and Fitness (RQF) aims to provide the learner with the skills, knowledge and competence required to gain a qualification in the workplace that relates to their role as a fitness instructor.

The Focus Awards Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Instructing Exercise and Fitness (RQF) is a competency based qualification for gym instructors. This qualification is aimed at those instructors who wish to progress their career in the fitness industry by proving their competency at Level 2.

 

Qualification Structure

Learners must achieve all 5 mandatory units (22 credits) and 1 pathway chosen from the options below (minimum 15 credits)

 

Mandatory Units

  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise
  • Work with clients to help them to adhere to exercise and physical activity
  • Reflect on and develop own practice in providing exercise and physical activity
  • Principles of exercise, fitness and health
  • Promote health, safety and welfare in active leisure and recreation

Pathways

Gym-Based Exercise

  • Plan and prepare gym -based exercise
  • Instruct and supervise gym-based exercise

Exercise to Music

  • Plan and prepare group exercise to music
  • Instruct group exercise to music

Water Based Exercise

  • Plan and prepare water-based exercise
  • Instruct water-based exercise

Exercise and Physical Activity for Children

  • Plan and prepare health related exercise and physical activity for children
  • Instruct health related exercise and physical activity to children

 

Qualification Type

The Level 2 NVQ in Instructing Exercise and Fitness (RQF) is a work based qualification accredited on the Regulated Qualification Framework (RQF). The RQF framework gives learners the opportunity to get the qualifications they need, in a way that suits them. RQF qualifications are designed with the help of employers so learners can be assured that they’re gaining skills that employers are looking for.

The RQF:

  • Recognises smaller steps of learning and enables learners to build up qualifications bit by bit
  • Helps learners achieve skills and qualifications that meet industry needs
  • Enables work-based training to be nationally recognised.

 

Learner Entry Requirements

  • The qualification is open to anyone who is capable of reaching the required standards.
  • The qualification requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary.
  • There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) and application of number involved, and learners should have basic skills in communication and application of number at levels 3 and 2 respectively

 

Employment Opportunities

On achievement of the Focus Awards Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Instructing Exercise and Fitness learners could look to move into becoming a personal trainer, advanced Instructor or a club/centre supervisor.

Learners wishing to progress from this qualification can undertake the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 Certificate in Fitness Management
  • Any other Level 3 qualification in the Health and Fitness Industry
  • Level 3 NVQ in Instructing Physical Exercise and Nutrition
  • Level 4 Higher Professional Diploma in Sport and Recreation Management
  • Level 4 HNC Diploma in Sport
  • Level 4 Certificate In Exercise And Nutritional Interventions For Obesity And Diabetes
  • Level 4 CertificateIn Exercise For The Management Of Low Back Pain
  • Intermediate Level Apprenticeship in Exercise and Fitness

 

Industry

The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) have provided a letter of recognition for the qualification indicating that the qualification is fit for purpose in terms of work based learning and progression within the health and fitness sector and is deemed a specialist category on their professional register.
